Hi all,
we are in the middle of an upgrade project from ERP ECC 6.0 EHP3 to EHP6. We have quite a SAP landscape spanning multiple systems from SNC over GTS to HCM for example. Some of those SAP systems e.g. SNC are connected to ERP via PI. We also have some external systems that are not controlled by us connected to ERP via SAP PI.
We now face the following potential issue: Before we'll finally go live with the upgrade, we'll do a backup of all involved system to have a consistent system landscape in case of upgrade failing / necessity to do a fall back. After upgrade is done we'll need to check if everything is working and we can consider the system as stable. For this to decide we'll have to commence some previously held back bookings in our production environment, some of them also need to be routed over PI (e.g. SNC). Let's assume we already commenced those processes, e.g a booking routed from SNC via PI to ERP. Now we find out that something's wrong and we may not fix this hence we'll need to go back before update. We'll do a restore then.
1. Would it be wise to do restore also on PI system? If so, would we need to restore both Java and ABAP? Or would a mere database restore suffice?
2. Having lined out that we might need to have PI up and running to verify upgrade status of ERP: How can we assure that e.g. SNC may communicate with ERP over PI but especially outside / external systems that are not under our control communicate with PI in that time frame so that they don't send any data to PI which would be lost in case of a restore of the PI system or would already have been booked in ERP system and then be lost in case of ERP restore? Is shutting down all communication channels sufficient for this or do I have to especially look for proxy communication and other stuff (which one then?), too? How to stop IDoc communication with PI for that matter?
I already read the best practice guide for backup and restore system landscape https://websmp201.sap-ag.de/~sapidb/011000358700004447112001E. As it holds very valuable information on data consistency and overall B&R practices it kind of falls short for PI specific questions.
Any thoughts on this topic would really be appreciated.
Kind regards
Jens
